The Royal Ark Mariners (RAM) is a side degree within Freemasonry that takes its theme from the biblical story of Noah and the Great Flood. The degree centres on Noah's construction of the Ark, the survival of his family, and the covenant God made with mankind afterwards, symbolised by the rainbow. It is considered a "side degree" because it sits alongside mainstream Freemasonry rather than forming part of a progressive ladder of degrees, it is appendant to the Mark Master Mason degree, and to join, a Mason must first be a Mark Master Mason. In England and Wales it is governed by the Grand Lodge of Royal Ark Mariners, which itself sits under the overall authority of the Mark Grand Lodge.
The working of the degree is relatively short and self-contained compared to some other Masonic orders, but it is rich in symbolism drawn from the Old Testament narrative. Candidates are said to be "elevated" rather than initiated, and the ceremony reflects themes of faith, refuge, and divine providence. The degree is known for its warmth and conviviality — RAM lodges (called "Fleets" or simply "Royal Ark Mariner Lodges") are often noted for their friendly atmosphere. Because it requires Mark Master Mason membership as a prerequisite, it tends to attract Masons who are already engaged with the side degrees beyond the Craft, making it a natural next step for those who enjoy exploring the wider landscape of Freemasonry.
